Welcome to a new term, at the start of this new calendar year. It is wonderful to see the children busily and happily occupied around school and facing the challenges that a sudden change of routine can bring. Tradition dictates that many of us use the start of another year to make a fresh start, to set new goals or make resolutions. During assembly this week, each pupil was challenged, as part of our continuing character education, to be ‘a better you’. Dean Close Prep puts great emphasis on cultivating virtues which contribute to good character and, having focused on kindness and resilience last term, this term’s emphasis is integrity. This valuable trait will be unpacked for the children in the weeks ahead, but as a starting point can be simply and helpfully seen as, ‘doing the right thing, even when no one is watching’ (C.S Lewis). A helpful, ‘better you’ challenge for us all in the term ahead.
