Lastweekend Dean Close School won the Open Division of the SUPA National Senior Schools’ Polo Championships.
The Senior Polo team comprising of Robbie Dee (captain), David Gibbons, Jake Bainbridge and Tom Coid played the most spectacular polo to give them the biggest Polo win Dean Close has ever had.
The excitement grew as the team played each chukka in the top Open Division of the SUPA National Senior Schools Polo Championships at Kirtlington, Oxon. They won their first chukka against Radley College A team (1-0) and then beat Bradfield College (1-0) before meeting Stowe School in their final match. Dean Close knew they only needed to draw (or win) against Stowe to win the whole tournament and so rode tactically to deny Stowe any chance of scoring, whilst also creating chances of their own to score. The final score of 0-0 was enough to win the tournament.
Head of Equestrian Sport, Paula Watson, said: “The team remained focused all day and was dedicated to the task in hand, always working out their strategies against extremely good opposition players. Their hard work, team work, horsemanship and excellent ball skills made the polo exciting to watch and I was extremely proud of each member of the team. This was a huge achievement almost as big as the Trophy itself!”
