Productions and Performances

School productions are divided into Senior and Junior year groups to ensure the older children can perform more challenging material and younger pupils experience taking leading roles in their own plays, rather than just making up the chorus as can often happen in school productions. All our productions are professionally directed by our Head of Drama, Lynne Lawrence, supported by an extensive costume department and accompanied by the music department, often with a full orchestra.

Plays are never produced for the sake of being produced. It is at this young age that a real sense of theatre, team, self-confidence and professionalism can be nurtured, and children learn swiftly that the best way of having a sense of dramatic achievement (and fun) is when we aim for a state of near-perfection on stage and back stage.

Years 3 – 5

Perform annually in the Lent Term – in recent years they have performed:

  • The Tempest
  • Dahl’s Diabolical Dilemmas – featuring Snow White and Cinderella
  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Archie Dobson’s War
  • Shakespeare on Trial
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Years 6 – 8

Perform annually in the Michaelmas Term. In recent years they have performed:

  • Oliver! The Musical
  • The Railway Children
  • Private Peaceful
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Performances are not just confined to the School play, plenty of other opportunities arise at performance platforms, end of term festivals and externally at competitions. We actively support the annual Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts. All pupils who take extracurricular speech and drama lessons participate and we are proud of the prolific cups and medals won every year.

Some pupils have also acted in professional theatre productions, television recordings and have auditioned for films. Many have gone on to professional acting careers in film, television and theatre and have gained places at prestigious drama schools such as RADA, LAMDA and Royal Central School.

Michael Morpurgo visited DCPS and watched the children perform scenes from ‘Private Peaceful’.
