All children from Year 3 – 8 are offered individual Speech & Drama lessons. Currently, half of all the Prep School pupils take advantage of these lessons which serve to enhance individual learning and skill.
Speech and Drama lessons serve to focus attention on the individual, developing performance skills such as diction, expression, characterisation and performance and communication skills. Pupils taking these lessons also benefit by participating in the annual Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts and are entered for the LAMDA Verse and Prose Graded Examinations.
Pupils can choose to have lessons either individually, in a pair, or in a group of 3 – 5 pupils. Pupils receive 30 lessons over the course of the academic year and lessons are timetabled on a weekly rota basis.
Drama is often seen as a predominantly female preserve – but at Dean Close, there is nothing unusual in finding half the rugby team singing “Pick A Pocket” in their spare time. Of the nearly 150 Prep School pupils who opt for Speech & Drama in the Prep School, over a third are boys, and this ratio increases dramatically in the Senior School.
