Pupils were thrilled to welcome Team GB Olympic Women’s Hockey Gold-Medallist, Alex Danson, to School. Alex
gave the pupils an inspirational presentation about setting personal goals before signing hockey sticks, hockey balls
and trainers; she even signed one pupil’s cast! Pupils from the Girls’ 1st and 2nd Hockey Team then had the privilege
of a hockey masterclass with Alex on one of the astroturf pitches.
During her presentation Alex talked about the value of setting personal goals and shared her own personal goal,
which was to play hockey at the highest level she could. She also talked about the importance of enjoying the
journey as being just as vital as appreciating the success when the target is eventually reached. Finally, Alex shared
the three main aims of the England Women’s Hockey Team:
Be the difference
Inspire the Future
Later in the morning, pupils were delighted to get up close to the Olympic gold-medal that Alex had brought with her to show them. Pupil, Esme Ledlie said, “Listening to Alex made me realise
that if I work really hard, anything is possible. I really want be play ‘centre forward’ in Team GB and
will do my best to achieve this. Seeing a real Olympic gold-medal was fantastic, it was much bigger than I imagined.”
Pupils also had the opportunity to ask Alex questions, they asked: Did she get scared or nervous before an important game?, Did she see any other games when she was at the Olympics?, How did the team celebrate when they won? And, was it true that the front of Team GB’s plane was painted gold for the return journey home?
