Huge congratulations to our U18 hockey girls who won the West Finals by beating Millfield in the Final 1.0, thereby qualifing for the National Finals in March. The U18 Dean Close team last won the National Title in 2013.

In their first match against Sherborne School, the girls started well and scored early through Danielle Gibson and then continued to outplay Sherborne winning 8-0. The second group match was against Queen’s Taunton and after a cautious start, the team won 3-0. The last group match was against Clifton College and was a decider for the group winner. Clifton defended well and despite attack after attack, theU18s found it hard to break down the Clifton defence until an outstanding goal from Danielle Gibson, and an even more amazing reverse stick finish from Jess Thomas, sealed the win.

As group winners, the girlsthen payed Canford School in the semi final. A near perfect performance from the whole side saw the Dean Close team through to the last two. In the final, Millfield School were the opposition andthe girlsdominated the possession but could not find a way through. Then a good end to end move produced an opportunity for Danielle Gibson to calmly finish reverse stick. The match finished with a Millfield short corner but an amazing save from Jess Thomas put Dean Close though to the National Finals.

Hockey Coach, Gary Tredgett, said: “The whole squad performed superbly all day and thoroughly deserved to qualify for the National Finals.”
