Early Years

The Beginning of The Learning Journey

At Dean Close Pre-Prep, our youngest pupils begin their educational journey in the Early Years, enjoying a stimulating play-based curriculum and a child-centered approach founded on the seven areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage. We strive to support every child's individual development by providing carefully planned experiences that foster a lifelong love of learning, combining child-initiated and teacher-led activities to engage, challenge and inspire each pupil. Children enjoy a wide range of experiences, including Music and PE, taking an active role in assemblies and performances. Outdoor learning remains and important part of the curriculum, with children making regular use of the playground, outdoor learning spaces and Forest School. These experiences encourage curiosity, teamwork, resilience and an appreciation of the natural world while supporting physical development and communication skills.

Nursery

In our Nursery for 2-3 year olds, children love learning and developing their knowledge through exciting activities and play, whether in their bespoke outside play area, the Wendy house, dressing up, painting, cooking or listening to a story on the cushions. As with the Squirrel Kittens, they also benefit from sharing the Pre-Prep facilities and join with Pre-Prep to take part in activities such as playtime, PE, Forest School, library time, music and dance and some assemblies.

Kindergarten

Children then move into one of our two Kindergarten classes where they take the next steps in their learning journey by developing early reading and writing skills, exploring phonics and building confidence in number work through child-led learning. They are also introduced to French through fun songs and games.

The conservatory area and outdoor playground adjoining the classrooms provide a stimulating environment for dressing up, water activities and imaginative play, helping to develop children's creativity and communication skills. Kindergarten pupils also continue their visits to Forest School, where they explore the natural world and learn more about their beautiful surroundings.
