Dean Close has a mixed population of with significant numbers of Day and Boarding pupils, and a small number of Flexi Boarders.

Every pupil is accommodated in a House which is their main social and pastoral unit.

Each pupil is allocated a House at the start of Prep School, and this House will stay with them throughout their time at DCPS. All younger siblings will have the same allocation as their older siblings in Prep School.

There are three Day Houses across the Preparatory School and the Houses are mixed with children from 7 to 13.

The Houses provide the opportunity for pupils to develop firm friendships, forged on a daily basis and through the regular inter-House music and sport competitions.

Prep Day Houses

Deacon Day House

Deacon is the newest of the day houses – we now have just over 70 children aged 7-13 who love spending time here with their friends. Pool, table tennis and table football are some of the most popular activities and it’s not unusual to see groups from several different years joining in together on one of the activities. There are also spaces for quieter activities – origami and colouring and also some creative play with Lego. We have lots of fun together and enjoy the chance to be in the house to have a bit of time out from the busy school routine. The children really look out for each other and there is a strong sense of identity as a Deacon Dragon which is really apparent in house events. It’s lovely to see how well they work as a team and we have a very strong ethos of inclusion and acceptance so that all the children are able to represent their house at these events. We aim to make Deacon a safe place where each individual is celebrated for their own unique personality and can really make the most of who they are.

Yeaman Day House

Yeaman is a happy, safe place where the children can play and relax away from the busy routine of the school day. They make good friends with other children in their own year and also build strong relationships with the children in other year groups.

We aim to ensure that every child is well known by at least one teacher and their Head of House.

The Christian ethos of the School is supported in house assemblies and in our treatment of each other. Respect is a central quality which we emphasise within the House: self-respect in the way that we try to do our best; respect for the property of the School and others; and finally respect towards each other – treating each other with kindness and tolerance.

House competitions in sport and music are an important part of the school year and are a chance to cement house identity.

Yeaman House is named after Sir Ian (David) Yeaman who was educated at Dean Close School in the early 1900s. He became a partner of Rickerbys Solicitors, Cheltenham, from 1922 and lived at “The Moat House”, Uckington.

There are currently 84 pupils in Yeaman, aged between 7-13. Yeaman recently celebrated its 50^th Birthday Anniversary. Our unique mascot is the rat, an animal of opportunism and determination!

Oaksey Day House

Oaksey is a fun filled, vibrant House in the heart of Rickerby. With approximately 80 children aged from 7-13 there is never a dull moment! The House acts as a home from home and this means that we do everything to make it a place where children are safe to be themselves. Our mascot is the penguin! This may seem an odd choice but it came about after watching Emperor penguins shielding their friends from the Antarctic blasts. It is our hope that ‘Oakseyites’ will be there for their friends not only when things are going well but also when times are tough and that the whole House will work as a team.
