Sixth Form

Life as a Sixth Former at Dean Close School holds a huge variety of opportunities. The world of choice opens up not only in academic terms, but also in the breadth of clubs, societies, roles of responsibility, entitlements and facilities solely for the Sixth Form.

Wide-ranging academic possibilities are offered through 23 different A level subjects including Politics, Greek, Classical Civilisation, Philosophy & Ethics, Psychology and Theatre Studies. A level results are well above the national average and the majority of Sixth Formers gain a place at their first choice university. A*/A / B grades are fully achievable, with 83% of all exams taken in 2021 resulting in those grades, aided by the average class size of around 10-12 pupils. The Headmaster sits down individually with every Sixth Form pupil to assist with their UCAS form and a Careers department is on hand for university and careers advice, counselling, testing, contacts and practical assistance.

A one-to-one tutorial system is designed to ensure that each pupil has a tutor who takes a particular interest in them, both academically and in terms of their wider well-being.  Sixth Formers choose their own tutors and the tutor-pupil relationship is usually a very strong one which can last a lifetime.

On reaching Sixth Form, pupils take great pleasure in leaving their uniforms behind to dress in business suits; many comment on how they enjoy relationships with tutors and teachers which become more adult.  Boarders also benefit from greater freedom and going into town at weekends.

Regular opportunities arise to hear and meet high profile speakers, some of the most recent being Ben Miller, Gavin Hesler, Sir Steve Redgrave, Stephen Fry, Cath Kidston, James Cracknell, Ben Fogle, William Hague, David Starkey and Andrew Marr.  Dedicated facilities include sixth form only boarding houses for both girls and boys; single study/bedrooms with en-suites and studies for all sixth formers in their day houses.

In the last three years, leavers’ destinations have included Bristol, Cambridge, Durham, Exeter, Imperial, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford, St Andrew’s, Trinity Dublin, UCL, Warwick.
