Last night Dean Close held its annual solo singing competition. This year a new class was introduced at the suggestion of Linda Parsons, who has been teaching singing at Dean Close for over 18 years. Linda generously donated a beautiful glass trophy for this Song Recital class. Each competitor, of post grade 8 standard, was required to perform a recital of up to 9 minutes which had to include a song sung in a foreign language and an English Art Song. The six competitors all gave quite exceptional performances which adjudicator, James Gilchrist, said would not have been out of place in a Conservatoire.
The class was won by Joe Morford who has been offered a Choral Scholarship to Merton College, Oxford where he intends to read Biology. Second place was awarded jointly to Ashton Mackinnon and Amy Porter and third place to Laurence Kilsby.
All of the competitors demonstrated considerable vocal maturity and stylish singing resulting in outstanding performances across the board. The audience was enthralled and visibly moved by the emotional intensity achieved by such young people
The adjudicator, professional tenor specialising in recital and oratorio singing, James Gilchrist, said:
“I have adjudicated many school competitions but this one quite extraordinary in the outstanding quality of all of the performers in this song recital class.”
Director of Music, Helen Porter, said: “To see music performed with such passion and authority has to be the very best part of my job. Last night was simply stunning.”
