French and Spanish linguists had a day out last week travelling to Bath University for a ‘Spotlight on Languages’ event.

Students were welcomed by the University’s Admissions Tutor for Languages who talked to them about the importance of studying languages.  The group then attended various workshops, including talks on French, Spanish and German culture, and taster sessions in new languages such as Italian, Russian and Mandarin. They then explored the campus with the University’s student ambassadors and the sporting facilities in particular amazed many. Following lunch, Dean Close students had a chance to hear from University of Bath alumni who had studied languages and find out where their degrees had taken them.

It was also exciting to meet up with Old Decanians Amanda Chinye, Elliot Bancroft and Pollyanna Harris (all 2019) who studied A Level Spanish and have recently started at the University. It was exciting to hear about their courses and their plans to use their Spanish skills during work placements during their degree.

Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Josh Sumner, said: “This was many students’ first visit to a university campus and it was great for them to have a taste of what studying languages beyond school can be like”.
