On Sunday evening a packed audience gathered in the regal surroundings of Pittville Pump Room to hear a truly beautiful rendition of Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt with performers ranging from eight years old, to Sixth form, to adults.

The School’s Chamber Choir and Schola Cantorum joined forces with the Bristol Ensemble for this performance which was conducted by Director of Choral Music, Simon Bell. The six soloists were all drawn from the current Sixth form and negotiated their way brilliantly through the challenging solo arias and duets. It was a joy to watch Dean Close perform this extremely demanding piece which features virtuosic writing for double choir throughout much of the work.

An orchestra member, who teaches at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, said: “I am amazed that a single school could have six soloists of such a high calibre available to perform these pieces from Israel in Egypt.”
