At this year’s UK MTC, Dean Close’s talented team came third. The annual competition tests pupils’ mathematical, communication and teamwork skills, as they compete against teams from other schools and colleges from their region. Dean Close entered a mixed team comprising of prep and year 9 pupils, owing to the strength of the young mathematicians in Year 8.
The team was selected after completing the Junior Maths Team Challenge in school. The successful pupils then practised diligently, three times a week outside of lessons, with the work obviously paying off with their very credible third place.
The 2017 challenge marks the sixth consecutive year that a Dean Close team has placed in the top three in the Regionals. The Head of Maths, Pete Garner, said: “the team has worked incredibly hard. They were conscientious, both in and out of lessons, with lots of extra practices to rectify tricky exercises. It was a pleasure to get to know the rising stars of the Maths Department”.
