As the nationwide third lockdown set in, The Flecker Challenge was designed to seize the opportunities of remote learning and inspire and test thinking beyond the set curriculum. Entrants were challenged to choose a subject area of their choice and complete a project set by that department or a ‘free choice’ project. Pupils could pursue any area of interest and present their work and ideas in an imaginative and informative way of their choosing.

The uptake was fantastic and at the close of the challenge after Lent half-term over 70 projects had been submitted in forms that included: videos, artwork, essays, apps, music, presentations, and web pages.

Winners and runners-up were announced in our livestreamed end of term assembly, though, due to the incredible variety and quality, this was no easy task. Departments awarded prizes for their set projects in the Junior and Senior Competitions, alongside a number of prizes granted by the Headmaster to projects emphasising five crucial qualities important to both academic study and for our world’s future. Finally, the best overall projects and runners-up for both the Junior and Senior Competitions each received an award.

Altogether, this was a collection of some truly outstanding and original work and the school offers congratulations to all who took part. Such success suggests we would be well served for the Flecker Challenge to become a yearly fixture, so watch this space.
