At the start of the termPre-Prepheld a very exciting and successful ‘Thinking Skills Activity Day’. Throughout the day the children were set a wide variety of challenges to developtheirproblem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Each classenjoyed a workshop session in the hall with Mrs Shelley where children had to work together to conquer challenges such as the ‘Skyscraper Challenge’ and the ‘Build a bridge Challenge’. Using only newspaper, sellotape and plastic cups the bridge they builthad to span the width of the ‘river’ and be strong enough for a toy car to cross! The children had great fun designing their bridges and then making their structures – the results were amazing!
The children then worked on different
puzzles both in their classrooms and
outside; displaying great thinking skills,
cooperation and problem-solving skills – which of course
was what the day was all about! Challenges included Reception designing a chair for ‘baby bear’,
Year One creating castles and Kindergarten discovering the best way to ‘free’ toys from ice. A great
time was had by all!
Challenges and puzzles will continue in classrooms throughout the year to encourage thinking-skills
across the curriculum including Mrs Shelley’s very popular ‘Challenge of the Week’.
