DCS Zoom Live Webinar: Higher & Degree Apprenticeships

(delivered by the Apprenticeships Support & Knowledge Project)

Tuesday 23 June, 6.00pm

As an optional part of our Lower 6th Futures Week, we hosted an informative Zoom-based webinar on Higher & Degree Apprenticeships delivered by the Apprenticeships Support & Knowledge Project. We thought it might be useful for parents and guardians to also have the chance to explore this area and have some of their questions answered. We are thus hosting a second session on Tuesday 23 June, 6.00-6.40pm, for parents and guardians (though your young people are welcome to attend as well).

These higher apprenticeships offer some powerful incentives and attractive options for school leavers, though the terminology and variance can be confusing. The session’s aims are to focus in on this pathway, demystify some of the confusion, look at the opportunities and offer expert advice on next steps.

If you would be interested in attending, please send a brief confirmation to dcscareers@deanclose.org.uk and we will send you the Zoom invite.

Book Returns

Any pupil who is needing to return textbooks can do so by dropping them off in the Front Office from Monday 22 June. This is particularly relevant to pupils in the 5th and Upper 6th Form. There will be a sign off sheet that will need to be completed.

Timing: 10am to 12noon, and 2pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday from 22 June

Where: Front Office

CCF Uniform Returns

Those leaving school or who do not intend to continue with CCF next year will need to hand in their uniforms.  Those unable to attend can do so in September.  It would be helpful if it could be bagged up and labelled as well.  Pupils will need to hand in the following items:

  • Beret and Badge
  • Combat jacket or Foul Weather Jacket
  • Combat Shirt or Shirt
  • RAF or RN Jumper
  • Trousers
  • Rank Slide
  • Belt

Pupils do not need to hand back their T shirt or Boots.

Timing: 10am to 12noon, and 2pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday from 22 June

Where: Front Office

Friday Chapel

Welcome to this week’s Chapel Service. All other broadcasts can be found on the Chaplaincy @Home page on the website.

Children of Key Workers / Change of Scene

We will continue to offer a provision for children of Key Workers in school but in addition, we are aware that a number of pupils are getting to the stage where they need a change of scenery and would find it helpful to work in school, either in the Library or a classroom environment. Please email Deputy Headmaster, Mr Andrew Hall on ashall@deanclose.org.uk if you would like your son or daughter to take advantage of this opportunity. In order to provide lunch, we would need to know the evening before.

Duke of Edinburgh

Important Update – PLEASE READ

As a result of not being able to run expeditions for the Bronze Award in the normal way but to allow recognition of the hard work that many participants have already put in towards completing the other sections of the Award, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award have introduced a special accolade for this year which is their Certificate of Achievement. This will be awarded to participants who complete all the other sections of the Award but are unable to complete their Expedition.

Now that DCS assessments are complete the remainder of term would be an ideal opportunity for this year’s 4th Form participants to complete their skill, physical activity and volunteering and submit evidence on their eDofE account to be approved.

For the Gold Award candidates, please look out for an email from Mrs Beecham with further details about your expeditions.

It is important for all Bronze and Gold candidates to read the ATTACHED INFORMATION!

Job Opportunity

Upper 6th Leavers

Each year St John’s on the Hill, our Prep School in Chepstow appoint 3 Gap Assistants to support the school in their day to day operations. It is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a broad range of areas. If you are interested in applying for this role, please email Mr Jason Dobbie on dobbiej@stjohnsonthehill.co.uk expressing your interest.

Daily Exercise Diary

We are very keen to ensure that all our pupils are maintaining a regular exercise programme, which is proven to be a great antidote for stress, and a enhances physical and mental well-being. As such, the Physical Education and Sports Department have created a daily exercise diary for the pupils to complete. It literally takes less than a minute to complete after an exercise session, but will give the PE Department and Houseparents a really good insight into the individual pupil’s activity levels. Pupils can access this via the link sent to them by Mr Baber-Williams.
