Highlights of the Week

  • Charity Bake Sale saw a feast of baked goods being sold in aid of the Brain Tumour Charity in memory of Helen Porter and Angus Caton’s Memorial Bench. See below for more details.
  • Spill the Tea (see last week’s mailing) was a real success with Evie and Sydney representing the school brilliantly at this CEP event.
  • So good to see our pupils playing tennis matches this week and finally, some cricket matches too!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Contact Tracing: Half Term

We are hoping that this won’t be necessary, but we would be grateful if you could contact us on office@deanclose.org.uk if your son or daughter develops any Covid related symptoms anytime between 5.00pm on Friday 28 May and 5.00pm on Sunday 30 May. This essentially covers the critical 48-hour ‘contact’ time period for contracting the virus whilst your child was in school.

If any pupils were to display symptoms during this window, and then test positive, we would be required to contact Public Health England, and make contact with the pupil’s close contacts, who would then need to self-isolate according to government regulations.

Lower Sixth Exams

Tuesday 8 June – Saturday 12 June

The Lower Sixth exams take place in the Old Gym straight after the half-term break.  During the exam week, the Lower Sixth pupils are on study leave; day pupils only need to come in for their exams, while boarders can study in Houses when not sitting an exam.  Because there are exams on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, the pupils are not expected to do Games then but are expected to meet any other team commitments.  Pupils should check the iStudent App (but not the Portal) to access the latest exam timetable.  If there is any error or you know any authorised absence during the trials, please email Dr Bradley at mbradley@deanclose.org.uk asap.

Grade Cards

Fourth, Remove and Lower Sixth; Music Reports for all years

Grade cards for Fourth, Remove and Lower Sixth Pupils have been published on the Parent Portal and iParent App along with instrumental music reports for all year groups.  Please log into the Parent Portal at https://deanclose.parents.isams.cloud/

If you have any problems logging in, please email Mr Adichareh at isams@deanclose.org.uk

Upper Sixth Prepare Week

Monday 14 to Friday 18 June

Dean Close proudly presents our 2021 U6 Prepare Week, a five day programme of academic seminars & lectures, talks, professional development workshops, career insight webmeets, and wellbeing activities, to support our leavers in their transition into university, the professional world, and beyond. Click here to view the range of events. A full timetable and online form will be released after half-term for pupils to choose their daily options.

Speech Day Weekend

Below are the proposed timings for Friday 25 and Saturday 26 June.

It is vital for our planning to understand how many people we are needing to cater for on site. To this end, please register your intention to attend by filling in the form accessed through this QR Code:

Friday 25 June

7.00pm Music Concert

9.00pm Jazz in the Village (time provisional)

Saturday 26 June

12.00noon U6th Leavers’ Photograph: Chapel Close

12.30pm Leavers’ Service: Chapel

1.15pm Buffet Lunch & Picnics

3.00pm Speeches: Marquee

4.30pm Refreshments in Houses

7.00pm Leavers’ Drinks

7.30pm Leavers’ Ball

Please note: This event is subject to change in line with government guidelines closer to the time. We will keep you informed.

It is very much our intention to host all pupils and the parents who would like to attend, BUT if we are unable to move forward as planned, we will reduce numbers in the marquee by eliminating groups in the following order:

4th Form Parents / Remove Parents / L6th Parents / 4th Form Pupils / Remove Pupils / L6th Pupils / 5th Form Parents / 5th Form Pupils.

We are planning to stream the event live for those who are unable to attend, and are also considering using the Theatre and Chapel as additional spaces to stream the event to, thus reducing the numbers in the Marquee but still enabling pupils and parents to be on site to share in the day.

Drama Productions

TUCKWELL THEATRE (Bacon Theatre if inclement)

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

by Oscar Wilde

21 and 22 June, 7.30pm

The most sparkling comedy ever written in the English language.

“In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity is the vital thing.”

Come and wear your green carnations and see accomplished and stylish actors Ethan, Matt, Grace, Lily, Sydney, Beth, Tom and Georgie give their farewell performances in the stunning sylvan setting of the Tuckwell Theatre.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

by William Shakespeare

23 and 24 June, 8.00pm

The L6 Theatre Studies set, with a little help from 4ths and Removes, are presenting Shakespeare’s romp as a Glastonbury Rock re-write: come and see these loonies fall in and out of love (one with a donkey…), while some naughty supernaturals cause havoc in the woods, and a group of useless actors try to put on the worst play ever

**Details of performances, tickets, seating and social distancing (or not) will be published after half term. TICKETS ARE NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL THEN.

Charity

Angus Caton Memorial Bench

After a heroic fight against brain and later spinal cancer, Angus died aged 14 1/4yrs on 28th June 2020. His family are raising funds to commission a metal bench to be made by a local blacksmith and placed outside Dale House in the Senior School. Angus loved Dale and Dean Close but his strength, resilience, and indomitable humour was also a huge inspiration to all who knew him. The bench will provide a special place where pupils can congregate, relax and remember the gift and joy of life.

In Memory of Helen Porter

Helen was a Dean Close teacher, Director of Music, tutor, parent and colleague who joined Dean Close in 1987. In the summer of 2019, Helen was diagnosed with cancer before passing away in September 2020. There is a beautiful piece about Helen in this year’s Decanian written by two long standing colleagues and friends. Helen’s husband, Michael, and her daughter Amy (who teaches at DCPS and DCS) are the inspirations behind the Helen Porter Bike Ride from Cheltenham to St Ives that will take place in two groups – one in May and another in July – to remember Helen and raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity. For the early risers – you might want to come and see them off at 6am on Saturday 29 May from Shelburne Road.

You can read more about their story and show your support HERE.
