Last week the U16 girls’ won the county netball and the county hockey championships within three days.

First came the netball, with a squad of 10 girls from Years 10 and 11 taking part in the Gloucestershire wide tournament. Competing against 17 other schools, the girls played with an excellent work ethic and team spirit to come away with the title. Great, smart, determined and tactical play shone throughout and the squad listened intently to what the coaches asked them to do. In the group stage they won all their matches, taking them on to meet Chosen Hill in the quarter finals with a 5-1 victory. In a tight scoring semi final the team beat Cheltenham Ladies’ College giving them a place in the final versus Cheltenham College, with another win 6-5.

Three days later, the U16 girls’ hockey team were taking part in the County Tournament held at Cheltenham College in a round robin format. The girls played Cheltenham College first in a tough match which they won 2-0. In the next match against Balcarras the team improved their play and won the match 4-0. Next came Pate’s Grammar and after a slow start they ran out 3-0 winners. Wycliffe School, who had also won all three matches, were next and a tough match ended in a 0-0 draw. This meant a win for Dean Close against Cheltenham Ladies’ College would crown them County Champions and their 2-0 win secured it.

Director of Hockey, Gary Tredgett, said: “The squad knitted well during the day with notable performances from Olga Stuerken, Hayley Collenette, Katie Hunt and Captain Lydia Ward. I was really proud of their performance as a team.”

Both teams will now progress through to the Regionals/West rounds to represent their county of Gloucestershire.
