Dean Close U13 boys recently travelled to Millfield School in Somerset to compete in the IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) National Hockey Championships and they won!! The team started the day a little nervously but soon got into their stride winning a group that included the team that would eventually finish as runners-up, as well as teams that would go on to win the plate and bowl competitions. A good 2-1 victory over Gresham’s in the quarter final set up a semi-final against St Andrew’s Pangbourne, who the boys had beaten in the final of the qualifying event earlier in the term. A 1-0 victory put the team in the final against Bilton Grange. It was closely fought, but one the boys deserved to win following a good strike from a penalty corner.
Well done to a great bunch of boys who worked hard throughout the tournament to achieve their goal!
Mr David Jones, their coach said, “I am absolutely thrilled! Over the previous couple years we have come so close, always reaching the finals but haven’t won it since 2015. The boys played some outstanding hockey, defending well and playing as a formidable team, I couldn’t be more proud!”
