This week the girls’ U14s travelled to Cannock Hockey Club to play their National Final play-off match against The Queen’s School, Chester. Dean Close dominated the early part of the match and after gaining several short corners still were unable to break down a very solid Queen’s defence. After a good run by Abby Norwood, and yet another corner, Dean Close managed to score. The opposition immediately came back into the match and caught Dean Close on the break, scoring a good goal and levelling the scores. The second half of the match was largely played in the opposing team’s half and the main goal scoring opportunities fell on the break to the opposition. Katie Hunt, Abby Norwood, Elie Clarke and Amelia Lovegrove tried valiantly to break down the resolute Queen’s defence but the Chester team managed to score again, pushing them into the lead. However, with two minutes remaining, Abby’s pass to Amelia allowed her to push the ball past the Chester Keeper for an equaliser. From the push back, Dean Close went straight back into the attack and gained a short corner on the final whistle. After a good shot from Katie, Amelia scored the winning goal, a dramatic win that puts the U14 Dean Close team through to the National Girls’ Finals at the National Lee Valley Hockey Centrein London later in the term.
