The U16 Netball Team have been crowned winners of the Gloucestershire County Tournament, securing their place at Regional Schools Finals.

A total of 20 schools participated in the competition yesterday afternoon. The team showed grit and determination throughout the tournament with each girl from the 12 strong squad taking to court at some point. The group stage consisted of four games. The first match against Cleeve School saw the girls win 16-2. With confidence soaring, we the girls took on Cotswold School and again notched up a strong scoreline winning 14 – 2. Up next was Wycliffe who had some talented players but the Dean Close team managed another impressive 18-8 win. The final group game was against a physical Tewkesbury side and a slow led to a 10 – 11 loss.

Due to the squad’s impressive goal difference the girls went through to the quarter finals as Group Winners meeting Cheltenham College in the first knockout round. Another slow start saw College go 3 – 0 up but with true Dean Close resilience, the girls clawed it back and finished with an 11 – 6 win, progressing to the semi-final against Ribston. The team played with impressive skill and style against Ribston; winning 12-7.

The final was against Farmors School and at half-time the game was level at 5 – 5. However, the team pulled out all the stops in the second half winning 9 – 5 and gaining the title of U16 Gloucestershire Netball County Champions. The squad will attend the Regional Round of this National Competition in January 2019.
