The Virtual Spring Concert represents just a snapshot of the vast range of musical activities that continued at Dean Close during the 2021 Lockdown. From January to March pupils continued to rehearse new repertoire, meeting up weekly on Teams or Zoom to run through their parts and to share tips in a split-screen format. Finally, pupils recorded their parts at home on phones, ipads, or whatever other device came to hand – the brave new world we’ve all become used to during the pandemic.

Ensembles represented in the concert include the Virtual Jazz Ensemble (comprising pupils from the Fourth Form to Upper Sixth), The Fourth Form Girls’ Choir, the Senior Close Harmony group and Sinfonia, our advanced string ensemble. The annual House Music Competitions (instrumental and vocal) drew over 100 individual entries, and we’ve chosen a selection of these including a piece from Michael, fresh from his successes in his piano and violin Diplomas.

In the Music Department, we’ve enjoyed the past few months of innovation – finding a myriad of new ways to make music through technology. At the same time we hope this might be our final Virtual concert for now and we look forward to returning to sharing the joy of live performance in the Trinity Term.
