On the 26th January, we were lucky enough to virtually welcome the world-renowned singing group VOCES8.
Members of the Chapel Choir had the privilege to attend a workshop over Zoom led by baritone Paul Smith in which the group worked to focus specific sounds to help create an atmosphere when singing a capella. Paul also taught pupils the parts for the sing-along section of the concert and then answered a variety of questions for us in the Q&A; ranging from what football team he supports (Arsenal) to his favourite choral composer (Herbert Howells). He also gave great advice on singing as a group, whether that be accompanied or a capella, on a stage or in a chapel, and he really stressed the importance of telling a story through music.
Then, later in the evening VOCES8 live streamed a special concert from their centre in London just for us, exhibiting a huge range of musical styles from 17th century polyphony to a jazz piece based on the chimes of Big Ben. Singing along with VOCES8 was such an incredible experience, even online, and we hope to welcome them back in person in the future.
