It has been a bumper week for girls’ sport! Winning the County Netball Tournament on Tuesday wasn’t enough for the U16 girls, so they added the County Hockey title to the Trophy cabinet on Thursday. This double victory in the space of just 72 hours is an enormous achievement.

The Drama Department once again treated us to a fantastic production, this time it was Steel Magnolias in the intimate setting of the Drama Studio. The characterisation from all of the actresses was superb.

It has been great to witness our pupils in action in the new Cooking School this week and those of you who haven’t yet seen this fabulous new addition to our facilities, do try and find the time to pop in on our Open Day on Saturday 15 October.

House Shout – Saturday 1 October

This whole school event takes place this evening in the Bacon Theatre, starting at 7.15pm. Unfortunately this event is not open to parents due to the pupils and staff filling the entire theatre. The Houses have been putting in a great deal of rehearsal time and it promises to be an entertaining evening with this year’s theme being based on the music of the American composer Cole Porter. Day pupils can be collected at 9.30pm.

Whole School Photograph – Wednesday 5 October

Every two years, we take a photograph of the entire School, which serves as a fabulous record and reminder for the pupils and members of staff. This coming Wednesday 5 October, all pupils are required to wear Best Dress, which means:

Lower School – all in Winter Dress, with girls in Blazers but not Jumpers. All need ties.

6th Form – all in dark suits with white shirts

Physiotherapy Provision

We are delighted to be able to promote further medical provision aimed primarily at supporting those pupils who have been injured through sport. Bookings can be made by emailing Niki Baker, the Games Department secretary, at nbaker@deanclose.org.uk or by phone on 01242 267428 between the hours of 9.00am and 1.00pm. For further information, please see the attached letter.

Art Exhibition – Bon Bernard Gallery 28 October to 20 November

We are delighted to be welcoming back Min Kim OD to the Art Department for a solo, retrospective exhibition in the Bon Bernard Gallery. Min left Dean Close in 2007 (Shelburne) and has gone on to study at The Slade School of Fine Art and, most recently, has completed her MA at The Royal College of Art. She is currently forging a career as a professional artist working both in the UK and Korea.

Her show, “Evolve”, is a retrospective exhibition that charts the past 10 years of her practice, from A-Level to current day, as she has searched for her own pictorial language and makes for fascinating viewing. Min is an exceptionally talented young artist whose work is as beautiful as it is extraordinary. The Private View is on Wednesday 5 October 5.30 – 7.15pm and it would be great if we could give her our full support at this event. We very much hope that you will join us.

School Counsellor

We would like to bring to your attention our new Counselling Service, and indeed welcome our new Counsellor, Clare Howlett, from Gloucestershire Counselling Service. The pupils are being introduced to Clare and will know how to make contact with her. This is a free, confidential service offered during the following times:

Tuesday 10.30am – 2.30pm

Wednesday 12.30pm – 5.30pm

Thursday 2.00pm – 6.00pm

Friday 8.00am – 11.00am

The first two concerts of this academic year take place during the coming week and parents, wider family and friends are very welcome to come along to support our musicians. Both concerts are in the Prince Michael Hall within the Music School.

Lunchtime Concert: Thursday 6 October at 1.20pm

New Musicians’ Recital: Friday 7 October at 6.15pm (This concert is the first opportunity for pupils who are new to the school, to perform.)

Uganda 2017

Many of you will be aware of the fantastic link which Dean Close has with Nyakatukura Memorial Secondary School in Uganda and we are delighted to invite parents and pupils to our launch meeting on Sunday 6 November at 8.00pm in the Prince Michael Hall. This biennial trip is scheduled to depart on 5 July 2017. Please see the attached letter for further details of this exciting opportunity. It is important to note that this trip is open to the 6th Form only.

Duke of Edinburgh

There are a large number of pupils who need to attend an ‘e’ D of E session to complete their Bronze and Gold Awards. They have been emailed details of times when Ms Hatchell is available to assist them in completing the relevant documentation, and parental support and encouragement from parents would be greatly appreciated.

There are still spaces available on the Sunday Bronze Training hikes on 16 October, 20 November and 4 December. If pupils are wanting to participate in any of these training outings, they must please notify Ms Hatchell.
