70 Prep School pupils took part in a performance of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’
The performance was held in our ‘1914 Centenary Hall’ to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, using original music written by our Prep School Director of Music, Tim McVittie.
The 70 pupils that were involved were made up of musicians and actors, aged 10 – 13. A theme of storytelling ran throughout the performance as Thomas ‘Tommo’ Peaceful (played by Ben Crossley, age 12) looks back on his life from the trenches in World War 1. All performers remained on stage at all times, using minimal costume and props, relying on performance alone to tell the story.
Director, Lynne Lawrence said, “The pupils rose to the challenges of the mature themes of love, war, betrayal and sacrifice, and dealt well with the unconventional staging”.
The performance was a great success with a full house both nights. Roger Jones, the school’s headmaster said, “It is inspirational to see what children of that age can do. I am immensely proud of my school and its pupils”.
