Year One enjoyed an exciting day out at Sandfield Farm as part of their science work, investigatingthe environment. After a talk on farm safety we walked to the woods to collect twigs, wood and other natural materials to build boats. We then took our resources back to the barn where we also used recycled containers, string and tape to construct our boats. Then we set off for the pond to test how well they would sail.
On the way we helped to return a young calf to its field and learned about how cows are used to produce milk. At the pond we launched our vessels into the water and, with the help of a gentle breeze, many of them made their way across the pond.
Before lunch there was time for a short session of pond dipping and it was amazing to see the variety of life in the water. In the afternoon everyone explored the Forest School area, where we played drums, built dens and made mud pies in the outdoor kitchen.
Year One is very grateful to Emma, who made the day a fantastic experience and a very memorable one.
