At the start of the new academic year, as part of our topic ‘The Victorians,’ Year Two visited Gloucester Warwickshire Railway for a fantastic Victorian steam train experience.
The day was very exciting. All the staff and children were dressed as Victorians and looked wonderful as the train pulled up at the station with steam billowing! We began our journey from Winchcombe railway station and travelled on the train to Cheltenham Racecourse and back with a quick stop on the platform at Cheltenham to watch the steam engine switch to the back of the carriages ready to pull us for our return journey.
On the train, we all sat at tables and drew pictures of what we could see through the carriage window. We then enjoyed a presentation at Winchcombe station about Victorian artefacts by The Wilson (Museum) from Cheltenham. The children were able to try on Victorian clothes and touch toys and other artefacts which were over 100 years old! After lunch, we participated in a Victorian treasure hunt and loved filling, pumping and squirting a Victorian fire hose with Fireman Phil! Finally we bought and wrote postcards which we posted to our parents. The day was an inspirational launch to our Victorian topic!
